Directed by Jeremiah Zagar, 2018, United States, Rated R, 94 min.

We the Animals is a touching, lyrical and intimate portrait of blue-collar family life, and of three boys who tear through their childhood in the midst of their young parents’ volatile love. While Manny and Joel grow into versions of their loving and unpredictable Paps (Raúl Castillo, “Looking”), young Jonah is sheltered by Ma (Shiela Vand, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night) in the cocoon of their home. More sensitive and conscious than his older siblings, trying to navigate his way around his macho father and brothers while discovering his artistic and sexual leanings, Jonah increasingly embraces an imagined world all his own. With poetic realism, We the Animals tells a visceral coming-of-age story, propelled by layered performances from its astounding cast—including three talented, young first-time actors—and stunning animated sequences which bring Jonah’s conflicted inner world to life.

The MWPAI Films series is pleased to host the Regional Premiere of We the Animals, an award-winning film made in Utica and the surrounding areas. A majority of the movie was filmed at an old house in Poland, NY, while other scenes take place on Broad and Bleecker Streets. The filmmakers will attend the Friday evening screening to answer questions and thank the community for its support.

Open Caption Wednesdays
Both Wednesday screenings will feature Open Captions (subtitles) for the benefit of our deaf or hearing-impaired guests. Please be aware that this service is not always available from the film distributor, but will be provided whenever possible.
