Directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, 2019, Germany, Rated R, 189 min., Subtitled
This grand epic by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, the Academy Award-winning writer/director of The Lives of Others, tells a gripping tale of social and political upheaval over three turbulent decades of German history, through the lens of art. It begins at the 1937 Nazi exhibition of Degenerate Artists, which Kurt, a wide-eyed little boy, attends with his free-spirited aunt. Surviving the war, Kurt (Tom Schilling) sees the Nazis replaced by the equally totalitarian communist rule of East Germany. He becomes an art student in Dresden, learning “Soviet realist” style, and falls in love with fellow student Ellie (Paula Beer). Ellie’s father, Professor Seeband (Sebastian Koch), a famous doctor, is dismayed at his daughter’s choice of penniless artist as boyfriend, and vows to destroy the relationship. Inspired by real events, Never Look Away is a masterful, moving family story of art, love, tragedy and politics. Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.
